MoneyTree Report released Saturday from CED Members PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association. by Cassandra Cranston.

Not categorized. Not tagged.

Investment in biotech and medical device companies climbed 10 percent, and funding for clean technology start-ups was up 14 percent. Venture dollars for Internet companies fell 36 percent. That is because Web companies today are so capital efficient that they cost much less to build and because there are many copycat Web ideas that are no longer getting funded, said Faysal Sohail, managing director of CMEA Ventures.

Durham-based SJF Ventures invests $1.6M in clean tech firm

{{a href="external_link-1224131"}}SJF Ventures, a venture capital firm based in Durham and New York, is investing $1.6 million in CleanScapes, a clean technology firm based on the West Coast.

The SJF investment is part of a $10 million Series A round. CleanScapes, which has offices in Washington, California and Oregon, is a 10-year-old firm focused on municipal collection services.

“SJF seeks out forward-looking ventures that bring clean tech innovations to inefficient, mainstream industries and CleanScapes fits the bill,” said Cody Apperson, an SJF Ventures Associate. “The company’s strong environmental, civic, and workforce strategies helped it win new major contracts and bring a breath of fresh air to the waste management industry.”

SJF has $45 million under investment.

CeNeRx - $15M in second-round funding by Dhruv Patel.

Not categorized. Not tagged.

http://localtechwire.com/business/local_tech_wire/venture/story/3756892/

CeNeRx BioPharma, its lead drug candidate having cleared Phase I clinical trials, is ready to go to Phase II tests and has $15 million more in the bank to do so.

CeNeRx has closed on a Series B round of venture funding, with existing investors Pappas Ventures, Aisling Capital and L Capital Partners leading the round.

Pappas is based in RTP.

CeNeRx has raised more than $33 million in funding. It closed on $18.5 million in 2005.

The new funds will be used for the next phase of trials for Tyrima, a drug intended to treat major depressive disorder, or MDD. CeNeRx is researching potential treatments for a variety of central nervous system disorders. The company also may use part of the new funding to buy rights to other compounds.

Tyrima is based on reversible inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A, or RIMA. RIMA based antidepressants are already sold in Europe. RIMA drugs elevate levels of three neurotransmitters that affect mood and anxiety rather than other antidepressants that focus on one neurotransmitter.

If the drug is approved it would be the first RIMA antidepressant available in the U.S. CeNeRx owns worldwide rights to Tyrima.

In the U.S. alone, nearly 15 million adults deal with what the National Institute of Mental Health calls “major depressive disorders.”

“This successful Series B financing is a validation of the excellent progress we are making in advancing Tyrima, which we believe has the potential to be an important new option in the $15 billion antidepressant market,” said CeNeRx President Mark Baric.

CED Member IBM opens new lab in Shanghai by Cassandra Cranston.

Not categorized. Not tagged.

IBM yesterday launched a new research lab in Shanghai in an effort to boost its R&D strength in one of the world's fastest growing countries.

The IBM Shanghai research lab, located at Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in Pudong New Area, will serve to help IBM attract more talent from southern China.

It will primarily focus on research fields such as cloud computing, information analytics and Web-delivered service computing and will host 100 researchers in the next couple of years.

"The very nature of research is changing. It is more open, more global and more collaborative," said John Kelly, IBM senior vice-president and director of IBM Research. "We are coming to Shanghai because of the exceptional talent and the greatest people here."

IBM spends $6 billion every year on research and development and has about 3,000 researchers in eight research labs around the world.

The company established its China Research Laboratory in Beijing as early as 1995 and now has more than 200 researchers in the country.

IBM's announcement comes as many multinational companies are starting to reduce their overseas investments to cope with the global economic slump.

But Kelly said he is confident about IBM's future in a fierce market environment.

"As banks consolidate, there is also a huge need for IT consolidation and banks' transactions will also grow after the consolidation," he said, noting that the importance of IT will not decline.

NC Television Journalists Launch New Media Training Company

Raleigh, NC - Award winning journalists Sharon Delaney McCloud and Kim Dean are heading up Triangle Media Trainers, LLC, a Raleigh based media coaching firm.

Triangle Media Trainers teaches business and government leaders, authors and athletes how to deliver their messages powerfully and professionally.  The team coaches clients using realistic, on-camera interviews followed by critique sessions. These challenging interview simulations are customized to individual industries, companies, and/or issues and take place in a state-of-the-art television studio or on location.

Sharon Delaney McCloud was a well-known anchor on NBC-17 in Raleigh before starting McCloud Communications in 2006. Since then she has directed her clients’ public relations programs, garnering national and international media coverage.  Now Sharon wants to focus on what she knows best – how to deliver a winning interview.

Viewers in the Triangle were first introduced to Kim Dean from her work on the nationally syndicated show Inside Edition.  Most recently Kim has shared the stories of people in the Triangle through her work as a reporter at WRAL-TV in Raleigh.  Together the pair has conducted thousands of interviews and they know a good interview doesn’t just happen.

Triangle Media Trainers also will offer crisis communication training that includes simulations tailored to the client’s needs. In our reporting days we called it ‘The Ambush,’” says Dean.  “If you haven’t rehearsed what you would do if cornered by a hard-charging reporter, you run the risk of getting into hot water.  The trick: make your mistakes during practice sessions, not during the real thing.”

Current clients of Triangle Media Trainers range from Fortune 500 companies to healthcare to real estate to industry professionals.  Triangle Media Trainers covers all of North Carolina and is now scheduling new clients.
